Keynote Speaker Larry Chitwood

Larry is the Forest Geologist for Deschutes National Forest where he has worked since 1972.  He works in the fields of volcanology, engineering, ground water, mineral resources, interpretive geology, and geothermal energy.  He holds a M.S. in Geology from Portland State University and a B.A. in Music from Whitman College.

 

Larry has authored or co-authored over 30 publications about geology and has made important discoveries in volcanology, hydrology, and engineering.  Larry played an important role in the creation of Newberry National Volcanic Monument in 1990.  He has given dozens of geologic presentations, field trips, and short classes.

 

In 1987 he taught a class at the University of Zurich in Switzerland titled "Geology and Geomorphology of the Pacific Northwest, USA." 

 

Larry has been a music teacher in the public schools, a church organist, and more recently, a pianist who for eight years accompanied the local Juniper Opera Company.

Larry and his quilting wife, Karen, have two children.  Lisa is a local artist who paints teepees for a living, and Peter who with his wife, Kayla, teaches at and maintains science field camps for OMSI (Oregon Museum of Science and Industry).
