Science is an ever changing landscape. We have new standards to focus our curriculum around, national standards are being developed and the content we teach must constantly keep up with new discoveries and new technology. But what doesn't change is how science is done. We need to work at teaching students how to do science so they can make their own discoveries and understand how we got to where we are with what we already know. Make science fun and interesting for them and for you.
Take advantage of every opportunity this summer to expand your horizons. Mike Rockow (your President-elect) and I were both selected to attend Space Academy this summer. The Honeywell Corporation is sponsoring teachers from all over the world to attend through Honeywell Hometown Solutions. What a wonderful opportunity to meet people from different locations and do so in an exciting learning environment. Many other opportunities exist. If not this summer, think about something for the next summer.
If summer doesn't work for you, don't forget the annual OSTA conference this fall on state-wide inservice day. Be a presenter and share your knowledge with others or just gain knowledge from others. Good inquiry activities or engineering design activities are in high demand. If you have some great ideas, come and share.
Well this year has rapidly flown by and we are almost to the end. I hope everyone has had a great year. Have a great summer and expand your horizons.
Lynda Sanders OSTA President
