Ambassadors will implement the Health DataWell High Quality Instructional Materials (HQIM) in their classrooms and help to amplify the reach and impact of these materials – both locally and nationally. NSTA Professional Learning experts will lead Ambassadors through various virtual professional learning experiences throughout the year, preparing them for presentations at NSTA’s Spring National Conference in Anaheim, CA, April 15-18, 2026.

Teacher workshop focussing on field-based science inquiry

August 4 - 6 at Molalla Retreat Center

The Diack Ecology Education Program and the Jane Goodall Environmental Middle School invite you to participate in a free teacher training focused on field-based science inquiry.

The Diack Ecology Education Program provides a system of grants, workshops and resources that are distributed to teachers and students in Oregon to encourage them to involve youth in field-based science inquiry and ecology studies. Field-based science inquiry provides the perfect opportunity to get students out of the classroom and into the natural world.

This three day workshop will provide hands-on opportunities in the field as well as classroom time to develop curriculum tools and strategies that promote student-driven field-based science inquiry projects from K - 12. Attending teachers can also apply for a $2,000 grant ($6000 if you work collaboratively with at least two other teachers) for classroom equipment and resources for field-based inquiry investigations from the Diack Ecology Education Program. This training is sponsored by the Diack Ecology Education Program of the Oregon Science Teachers Association and the Jane Goodall Environmental Middle School (JGEMS), a public charter school in Salem, Oregon, focusing on field-based environmental science.

Free Summer Professional Learning - New Science Classroom Observation Tool!

Members of the Oregon Science Teachers Association are invited to a FREE professional learning on the Dimensions of Success for Middle Grades Learning Engineering and Science (DoS-MiddLES), a strengths-based observation system for grade 5 to 8 science and engineering classrooms.

Our research team at the Institute for the Study of Resilience in Youth (ISRY) has worked with science teachers across the U.S. to redesign the DoS-MiddLES, which integrates learning and doing science and engineering with building resilience and thriving skills. Our teacher partners shared that they appreciate the DoS-MiddLES’ “concrete suggestions and small tweaks” to their practice and we’re excited to invite teachers in Oregon to REGISTER HERE to join one of our initial cohorts to become certified to use the DoS-MiddLES observation tool.

Through our Certification-Based Training, held in Summer 2025, learners will develop skills in conducting standardized classroom observations using the DoS-MiddLES system. They can also receive a copy of the DoS-MiddLES observation tool, a certificate for up to 20 hours of professional learning, and $50 for sharing feedback about their learning experience.

Science Practices in Action: Asking Questions and Engaging in Argumentation from Evidence Using Wildfires as a Phenomenon

Support your students as they practice being scientists by engaging with locally relevant phenomena (wildfires). We will utilize science practices and demonstrate how scaffolded questioning leads to the development of claims with supporting evidence. This interactive workshop will focus on free, classroom ready resources from BioInteractive. While we’ll use wildfires as a phenomenon, the practices we’ll feature have applicability across curricular units for any high school life or environmental science course. Why: Over 20 years ago many ideas were germinating across the country about how we could improve the meals kids ate in schools in ways that could also help farmers prosper. Those ideas grew into a movement and then institutionally took root in Oregon when in 2007 the Oregon State Legislature created the statewide Farm to School and School Garden Program.

Fast forward 20 years, and Oregon is home to the robust Oregon Farm to School and School Garden Network in partnership with public programs within the Oregon Departments of Agriculture and Education and at Oregon State University all working in concert with countless statewide non-profit organizations, Commodity Commission, individuals and private businesses. Historical hiring practices dictate that ~50% of operator positions witness hiring preference to operators with experience. The other ~50% includes individuals with the appropriate education level. Each year, EarthEcho International hosts the OurEcho Challenge STEM contest to encourage young leaders, ages 13-16, to audit biodiversity in their community and to come up with a project idea to restore and protect the biodiversity in their own backyards. PCS will award three scholarships in the amount of $2500 to students from the Seattle, Tacoma, and Portland area communities. The intent of the scholarships is to aid students of color or students under-represented in the STEM professions.

To be eligible, high school seniors or college freshman students must be planning to pursue a two- or four-year degree related to engineering or engineering technology, physical or biological (non-medical) studies, architecture or construction, environmental technology, computer science, math or UX design. Paid Opportunity - Science and Engineering Practices for Online Air Quality Education

This webinar will introduce Air & Waste Management Association (A&WMA) to middle and high school science teachers across the US and Canada and share an exciting paid opportunity with teachers to bring Air Quality into their science classrooms.

We are looking to recruit middle and high school science teachers to pilot the AQ6-12 lesson in their classroom and provide the K12 Education Committee with feedback. Selected teachers may earn a $1,000.00 stipend during the Spring 2023 semester for completing all tasks. Teachers from public, charter, and private or independent schools who teach environmental science topics in their science classrooms are eligible to apply. We anticipate about 10 hours of work.

We strongly encourage Title I middle and high school science teachers to submit an application as well as middle and high school science teachers from schools in areas chronically exposed to poor air quality.

Future Engineers - NASA Tech Rise Student Challenge

NASA is now accepting entries for the second NASA TechRise Student Challenge. Open to students in sixth through 12th-grade, the challenge invites teams to design and build science and technology experiments on a suborbital flight test. Entries are due on October 24, 2022 and NASA will announce the challenge winners in January 2023. Each of the winning teams will receive $1,500 to build their experiments and an assigned spot to test it on NASA-sponsored high altitude balloon flights.

Each year, StellarXplorers hosts a National Space Design Competition, which challenges teams of students across the country to solve real-world orbit determination, satellite component planning, and launch vehicle selection scenarios presented in a series of online rounds. Students have a chance to solve real-world space design challenges, and the best part is no prior experience is required for participation. We provide all the necessary training and software resources needed for success. We also have a technical mentor program that allows industry professionals to volunteer their time and help teams prepare.

Team registrations for our ninth season of competition (StellarXplorers IX) are being accepted through October 17, 2022. Competition rounds are scheduled to begin in late October, and every team is guaranteed three rounds of participation. High School Science for All: the Patterns Approach

The Portland Metro STEM Partnership is excited to announce that registration is open for the High School Science for All: the Patterns Approach courses for this summer! The five-day summer courses on the High School Science for All curriculum: NGSS Physics, NGSS Chemistry, and NGSS Biology will occur during the first three weeks of August. The courses provide a great foundation for teachers interested in utilizing the open source curriculum and associated instruction strategies (course fee: $475).
