Creating a learning experience for all students to meet all standards is hard work and should not be done in isolation. Moving science instruction forward at the elementary level can be difficult given school and district constraints, barriers, and limitations when literacy is often the primary focus. What if we used the wonder of science to engage students in a meaningful pursuit of knowledge.. to think and act like scientists, thus providing the impetus needed to promote language and literacy. What if we collaborated using the Next Generation Science Standards as the instructional framework for integration to develop language and literacy in all students, but especially our English Learners?

This workshop builds off of the learnings of the Math Science Partnership Grant: Expansion of K-6 NGSS Science Instructional Specialists. Experience active engagement of phenomenon-based activities throughout this session with modeling by classroom teachers. Receive support on how to have your students be captivated, capable and committed learners who are scientifically literate! Using research based instructional strategies and classroom tested learning experiences, workshop participants will go through a coherent and cohesive plan for how to move science instruction into the next generation where rigorous science and rich language support each other.

Presenters: Carol Biskupic-Knight, Beaverton School District, and Jennifer Whitten, Beaverton School District.

Four (4) PDU's will be provided to attendees.
