Patterns Biology: Ecosystems and Biodiversity Workshop

  • October 13, 2018
  • 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM
  • Newport Middle School, 825 NE 7th St, Newport, OR 97365
  • 24

In this three hour workshop, participants will engage in the anchoring phenomenon of declining urban biodiversity both locally and globally by exploring the essential question: How does the increase in the size of human populations impact biodiversity and how can we reduce those impacts?

Participants will conduct a leaf litter biodiversity inquiry as well as a conservation engineering project.

A full unit covering HS-LS2-1, 2-2, 2-6, and 2-7 will be reviewed and shared with participants.

NGSS Connections: This workshop will engage participants in the disciplinary core ideas of Ecosystem Dynamics, Functioning, and Resilience; Interdependent Relationships in Ecosystems; and Human Impacts on Earth Systems. Crosscutting concepts highlighted include Scale, Proportion and Quantity as well as Stability and Change. Most importantly, teachers will live the experience of the scientific and engineering practices of Designing an Investigation, Arguing from Evidence, and Designing, Evaluating, and Refining a Solution.

Instructors:

Caitlin Everett, STEM Specialist, Beaverton School District and Senior Projects and Professional Development Coordinator, Portland Metro STEM Partnership

Jessy Chamberlain, Biology teacher, Southridge High School, Beaverton School District
